Jannat Ara Mazumder. World’s tallest statue is in our country, a matter of proud. Now the whole world will have the vision of respect towards our country. Tourists from all over the world will visit our country. Also the tourism industry will gain a huge profit . Many of the unemployed folks will get employed here. What a tribute it is!
Let us analyse the story and facts of the statue. The Statue of Unity is a colossal statue of Indian statesman, freedom fighter and first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950) located in the state of Gujarat, India. It is the world’s tallest statue with a height of 182 metres (597 ft) located on a river island facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada in Kevadiya colony, 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of the city of Vadodara.
The project was first announced in 2010 and the construction of statue started in October 2014 . It was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st October, 2018, on the auspicious occasion of Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday.
Economic Fact : The whole expense of the statue has been Rs. 3000 cores (Approx), out of which the statue is worth Rs.1,350 cores.(180million dollars) (Approx). Let us not forget about the former tallest statue of the world located in China. The whole cost of the project was Rs. 50 million dollar, out of which 18 Millon dollar was the net worth of the Spring Temple Buddha statue in China. The difference between the cost of former statue and the current statue is 10 times . The statue of unity measures 182m and the statue of the Spring Temple Buddha in China measures 128m. There is not a huge difference between the height but a large difference between the cost. Though the Statue of Unity is not built with gold. Now there lies a question regarding the management of economy .Some will say that whatever we invested will be back through the tourism Industry.
Let us analyse the tourism also.
There potential reasons which will not make the statue of unity a popular destination for tourists because of its location. Generally big monuments and statues are located in big and famous cities for which these are most popular place for tourist destinations whereas the statue of unity is not located in such areas . On the other hand there’s no any uniqueness lies on the statue of unity. Neither it gives the message of unity nor it has any pose describing unity . Third reason is beauty, famous monuments like Taj Mahal, Ajanta and Ellora caves, Meenakshi Temple etc. have got some unique style, colour, architectural designs due to which it attracts the tourists . But the statue of unity has no particular artifacts nor any attractive colour or architectural designs. So all these reasons will not make the statue of unity a tourist attraction.
The place where the statue is situated located used to be resident place for many people. All the members of nearby places had to shift from their own place to another for the sake of this project. The development caused a severe destruction to the people and also increased the number of unemployment and increase of pollution.
No development is acceptable if it harms the rights and liberties of its citizens. After our Narendra Modi’s prime ministership , he will be asked what did you do for the nation? Instead of expected answers like development of health, education, economy , he will be answering that the world’s tallest statue has been built under my govt. though in reality, it has nothing to do with the citizens and their betterment. The money of the taxes which we Indians pay to the govt. shall be used for our economic development, education, health and other important sectors rather than making a statue which turned out to be a hazardous for people living there.
God bless India.
